We at cablejump.com
mourn the tremendous loss of life in the Bay of Bengal
region of Asia. Experts are calling the earthquake
and tsunami the worst natural disaster of our time.
Over 70,000 people are reported dead, over one-third
of whom are children. The World Health Organization
has noted that the lack of clean water and sanitation
could lead to an equal number of deaths in the coming
days and weeks as communicable diseases ravage the
survivors.

This catastrophe highlights the importance of global
communication. Please help organizations on our site.
Please give and email as many people as you know to
give! Please make a difference by reaching these remote
areas with donations.
Thank you and God Bless the victims and survivors. |

Tibetan Teens Reach Summit of Achievement
| Why would a blind man climb Mt. Everest? For adventurer Erik Weihenmayer, the main reasons are the same as they would be for any sighted person: "Because it's there!" closely followed by "Because I can!" Thanks to Weihenmayer's leadership, a group of visually impaired teenagers from Tibet can now say the same thing. |
 |
It was shortly after Weihenmayer's successful Everest expedition in 2004 that he was invited to the Braille Without Borders School in Tibet to talk about his experience. He immediately proposed taking a group of students from the school on an adventure all their own.
Sponsored in part by AFB, the Climbing Blind project sent six kids ages 14-18, two teachers, and eight experienced climbers on a challenging two-week expedition into the Tibetan mountains just north of Mt. Everest. |
Depending only on rope, their wits, and each other, the team reached the Rongbuk Glacier, roughly 21,500 feet above sea level. It was a feat of will and endurance that none of the young participants ever imagined they'd achieve—which was, of course, the point.
As Weihenmayer wrote in a dispatch at the conclusion of the journey:
"Every day, as [the team] navigated boulder fields, crossed frozen narrow ice bridges and gasped for air in the thin oxygen, they were breaking new ground in their own perceptions of their capabilities, as well as for the other blind people of Tibet.
"Strength, courage, and resiliency may be in everyone, but they start as tiny sparks…it's only through facing challenges that they grow and blaze into a force that directs our lives and ultimately creates change in the world." |
