Exfam America Responds to
Hurricane Katrina September 1, 2005
John,
Hurricane
Katrina Relief and Recovery
Hundreds of thousands of families are attempting to recover
from the storm that left massive devastation in its wake. Together
with our local partners, we are now assessing the situation
to determine where our help is needed most. Coastal flooding
may have caused severe damage to farmers’ fields and fisheries,
for example, jeopardizing the livelihoods of the communities
with which our partners work.
Please
make a contribution to help with our response and recovery
efforts.
Ask
President Bush to support increased funding to the United Nations
Emergency Reserve Fund
Last week we asked for donations to help support people suffering
through the West Africa Food Crisis. This week we ask for your
voice.
Click
here to send an e-mail to President Bush asking that he
strengthen the UN Emergency Reserve Fund. Perhaps we can prevent
a crisis like this from ever happening again.
Find
out what your donations are funding in West Africa
In just one week, you helped us raise $130,000 for West Africa!
To help nomadic people endure the crisis, Oxfam is funding livestock
purchasing programs, which help herders keep money flowing through
the rural economy. Food voucher-for-work programs help others
feed their families while carrying out useful community projects.
Read
about the second tsunami that wasn’t
As a member of Oxfam’s eCommunity, you helped raise funds
that eventually saved thousands of lives after the Dec. 26 Asian
tsunami and earthquake. Read a New York Times editorial, which
describes how the coordinated efforts of international aid organizations
averted a major health crisis among tsunami survivors.
Learn
how Coldplay and Oxfam America are working together to Make
a Big Noise about unfair trade
British rock group Coldplay and Oxfam America are working
together to call attention to bad trade rules that keep millions
of farmers in poverty. Oxfam America has joined with Sun Microsystems
to ask Coldplay concertgoers to use their cell phones to sign
the Big Noise petition to Make Trade Fair. You can join them
by sending a text message with your e-mail address to TRADE
(87233).
